I have Windows XP on my computer with a dial-up connection to the
internet. If I get a broadband connection and keep it on 24-7 will that
make it easier for hackers to get into my computer? If so, is there a
way to turn my broadband connection off before I turn off my computer?
Thank you.

How about using a router? (Linksys, Netgear, Netopia, SMC.... Any)
You can filter incoming strange packet and you can assign private IP
to your PC. Hackers can't reach your PC directly, I think.
